Barbara Jean Murphy

Barbara J. Murphy, 91 of Avon, formerly of Brazil, passed away April 15, 2020 at The Hearth of Prestwick in Avon with her son and daughter by her side. She was born September 13, 1928 in Clay County, the daughter of John W. Funkhouser and Opal Wilson Funkhouser. She graduated from Brazil High School and attended Indiana State University for two years. In high school, she was voted May Queen, was in the Honor Society, Prom Queen and Secretary/Treasurer of the Class. She also enjoyed being a part of RaVon Drama Club. She also was Honored Queen of Jobs Daughters and later was active in Eastern Star. Barbara was also in Delta Theta Tau in Brazil and Lambda Delta Phi while at ISU.
On December 2, 1950, Barbara was united in marriage to Charles Andrew Murphy. Together they raised their family in Clay County.
Barbara worked in the bookkeeping department for Riddell National Bank and taught at the St. Mary’s Parochial School in North Vernon in the late 1960’s.
As a young lady, Barbara was baptized at the First Christian Church. Later in life, she enjoyed attending Mass with her daughter at Mary Queen of Peace in Danville, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Charles Murphy in 2004.
Survivors include her daughter Cathryn Hamilton and husband Bruce of Avon, and son, Charles Bradley Murphy and wife Pamala of Pinckneyville, IL; grandchildren, Justin Hamilton (Rachel DeMatteo), Laura Perrelle, Charles Jonathan Murphy (Denise) and Sarah Kimberly Trunnell (Jesse); 8 great-grandchildren, Autumn, Iris, Carter, Madelyn, Samantha, Amelia, Eliah and Tyler.
