Look Up, You May See A Meteor Shower Tonight

INDIANA – Take a few minutes tonight to look up at the night sky — you might be able to see the Lyrid meteor shower at its peak.

The meteors are made of dust and debris from the comet Thatcher, a comet that orbits the sun once every 415 years. Comet Thatcher most recently passed by the sun in 1861 and is due back in 2276.

Skywatchers can expect to see 10 to 20 meteors per hour during the shower’s peak, which is at around 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to space.com.

Skywatching Tips

– Get away from the city — go somewhere as dark as possible.

– Find somewhere comfortable you can lean back and stare up at the sky.

– Allow 20 to 30 minutes to allow your eyes to adjust.

– Rely on your naked eye — binoculars and telescopes will narrow your view.
