VIGO COUNTY, Ind. — Thursday night, the Vigo County School Board met to discuss and vote on several big issues.

The board voted to approval seeking a $10 million tax anticipation warrant.

Due to the pandemic, the state has extended the due date for property taxes and that could mean a delay in money from the state.

Those taxes help pay for transportation, capital projects, and debt service for the school corporation.

The loan would help to cover cash flow needs.

The board also approved the sale of the downtown administration building to the Capital Improvement Board for $3 million dollars.

The vote was 5-2 with Rose Marie Scott and Jackie Lower voting no.

Scott said that she had been contacted by over one hundred constituents who thought it was not a good deal. She questioned the appraisals that she said she had not seen.

The board has yet to decide just where to move the administrative offices but now the clock is ticking to decide on where to move by the end of next year.

The current site will be used for a parking lot for the new convention center.

The school board also approved moving alternative classes from McLean Education Center to the Booker T Washington school and accelerating the purchase and distribution of Chromebooks to all high school students.

Superintendent Rob Haworth also spoke of the administrations intent to change high schools from a “Trimester” system to a regular two semester system. The board will vote on that at a future meeting.

The public was not allowed to attend due to distancing guidelines. The meeting was broadcast on Facebook live with several comments about not being able to hear speakers during the meeting. Public comments were not allowed during the meeting but had to be submitted by email before the start of that meeting.
