INDIANAPOLIS – There have been some confusion as to whether customers can serve their own soft drinks at mini marts and other locations.  Several county health departments have told merchants that their self-serve counters must be shut down or staffed by an employee.

More confusion was created Wednesday when Governor Holcomb said that merchants could keep their self-serve drink dispensers open.

Today we reached out to the Governor Eric Holcomb’s office  and received the statement below by email from the Governor’s Press Secretary Rachel Hoffmeyer.

The Indiana State Department of Health is following up with local health departments to advise them that gas stations and convenience stores can continue offering beverage stations and food stations as they have during the stay at home order. We will work with the related business associations for guidance for the next executive order.

Thursday afternoon, Roni Elder with the Vigo County Health Department said that in Vigo County they were going to be more strict with their rules and go beyond the state of Indiana.

Elder said in an email that the Governor originally had said that self-serve beverage stations were to be roped off but he has changed that guidance for gas stations and convenience stores but not for restaurants. You can find more about Vigo County ONLY by clicking here.

Every county can make their own adjustments and be more strict if they wish.
