Police say someone opened fire on the officers and guardsmen, who returned fire, killing David McAtee. It happened as law enforcement was trying to break up a large crowd gathered at a gas station.

McAtee was a black business owner in the city’s west end.

Robert Schroeder was named acting police chief.
