Terre Haute Man Arrested On Multiple Charges After Chase And Crash

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind – Around 9:45 a.m. this morning (6/4/20) The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car traveling north on S.R. 63 from Elanco at a high rate of speed.  The vehicle was clocked traveling at 83 M.P.H. just south of Newport.

The had turned off the highway and was crashed in Newport at the corner of Hopkins and Market St.

The driver was identified as 21 year old Zachary Craffets from Terre Haute.

Deputy Hall had his K9 Zeus to do a free air sniff of the vehicle for the presence of narcotic odors.  K9 Zeus alerted to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle and a small amount of marijuana was located.

Police say that Craffets he showed signs of impairment.  Field sobriety tests were given to Craffets and he failed all tests given. He then submitted to a chemical test and was transported to Union Hospital Clinton for a blood draw.  Craffets failed chemical tests (Amphetamine, Benzodiazepines and marijuana) and was transported to the Vermillion County Jail.

Craftets was arrested for fleeing in a vehicle (Level 6 Felony), reckless driving (A Misdemeanor), OVWI (prior Level 6 Felony), possession of marijuana (B Misdemeanor), possession of paraphernalia (B Misdemeanor) and leaving the scene of a property damage accident (B Misdemeanor).  Craffets was cited for speeding and driving while suspended.

 

Craffets will be released on his own recognizance with a court appearance date.
