
Joyce Elaine Nees, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2020 in Union Hospital in Clinton, Indiana with loved ones by her side.
Joyce had been in failing health, for several months. Joyce was born on January 5, 1939, at home, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Joyce grew up on a farm amid several sisters and one brother in Clay County, Indiana until marrying Theron Nees at a young age. Joyce graduated from Indiana State University, earning Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Elementary Education. Joyce spent her entire teaching career at Jackson Township Elementary. She is listed in the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers having made a positive difference in the life of her students. Joyce was also nominated for a Golden Apple Award. Joyce was an honor student in school as well as college.
Joyce was an avid reader. She had many other hobbies that included mushroom hunting, fishing, and traveling, every time she got the chance. But day in and day out she could be found with a book in her hands.
Surviving are her son Steve Nees and his wife Melody of Clay City, granddaughters: Amber Nees Jordan, April Nees, Susie LaForce Canner (Garry), and Autumn LaForce Carver (Rich); great-grandchildren: Hailee Lynn, Tyler Lynn, Nathan Canner, Travis Canner, Samantha Pickel and Elaina Ellis; sisters: Penny Clevenger, Mary Wright, and Candy Foster as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death are her daughter Kim Nees LaForce; parents Wayne and Constance Whallon; a sister Susie Whallon Hasler; a brother Wayne (Butch) Whallon.
A Celebration of Life memorial will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 2:00pm in Bowling Green, Indiana, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor David Stephens officiating.
