George Lewis Smith, 79, of Clay City passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born in Coal City, IN on November 9, 1940 to Howard and Marie (Wright) Smith

George was a 1958 graduate of Coal City High School and attended Vincennes University. He was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church in Coal City, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite in Terre Haute. George also enjoyed watching NASCAR and the Cincinnati Reds. He retired after 40 years with the United Mine Workers Association,

George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Laianna E. (Neiswinger) Smith and his parents, Howard and Marie Smith.

Survivors include his sons, Ritchie Smith and wife, Beth and Rodney Smith and wife, Christa; a sister, Wanda Dyer Copeland; grandchildren, Bailey Smith, Chelsey Smith, Brooklyn Navarre and husband, David; and 2 brothers-in-law, Charles “Mark” Neiswinger and wife, Sharon and Michael “Mick” Neiswinger and wife, Myra.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 19, 2020 in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. 8th Street, Clay City. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
