Thelma Burger, 98 of Coal City, went to meet her Lord and Savior August 28, 2020 at 11:30 am at her home with her family by her side.

She was born August 9, 1922 in Owen County, the daughter of Estal Klass and Ruth Anna Wells Klass. She was raised in Coal City, graduated from Coal City High School in 1940 and attended Indiana Business College in Terre Haute. After completing business college, she first worked at Weatherwax Chevrolet Garage in Coal City. Later she worked at the Indianapolis Athletic Club and the Ordinance Depot at Terre Haute. As a young lady, she married Ralph E. Defore. He was killed in WWII. She married Elvin E. Burger November 30, 1946 and they built their life together mainly in the Coal City area. They attended church in Worthington and she last was a member of the Antioch Christian Church. She was the organist at church and a Sunday School Teacher.

Among her memberships through the years, she was strongly involved in the Coal City Festival Committee; a member of Putoff-Lautenschlager Legion Auxiliary of Coal City; Associate member of the UMWA; the Jefferson Township Coal City Alumni Scholarship Committee; former member of the Coal City Fire Department Auxiliary.

Thelma was a homemaker and the center of her family. She enjoyed embroidery work, reading and was an avid walker.

Survivors include her daughter, Trella Schepper and her husband Jim of Coal City; grandchildren, Joseph William Moser and wife Barbara, Jennifer Ann Moser Clark and husband Dan; great-grandchildren Emma Ruth Baum, Madeline Clark, Waylon Clark, Gwen Moser and Lucas Thorne Moser; one sister Leealla Jackson; one niece Lois Perunko; three nephews, Jay Grafe, Steve Grafe and Jack Burger and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Estel and Ruth Klass and their grandson, Matthew Allen Moser in 2003. Her second husband Elvin Burger passed away in 1986.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Pastor Bret Eaton officiating. Burial will follow at Fiscus Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday 4-8 and again Wednesday one hour prior to services. Post a note of condolence at www.schoppenhorstfuneralhome.com
