Sister Dorothy Drobis died on Oct. 15, 2020, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Feb. 20, 1932 in Chicago, IL, to August and Veronica Kowalski Drobis and was baptized Adeline Dorothy.
Sister Dorothy entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1952 and received the name Sister Irene Therese. She professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1959. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Of her 68 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 40 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma and North Carolina. Retiring from teaching, she coordinated the memorial program at Misericordia Home in Chicago for five years. In 2000, she returned to the Motherhouse and served her sisters as coordinator of health care transportation. Completing six years in that office, she continued to serve her sisters in a variety of ways. Beginning in 2016 she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Dorothy was a generous, caring, and prayerful woman. She was committed to service and gave great attention to any task she was assigned. She had a particular love for those in need, choosing to teach in center city schools in Chicago for the last 24 years of her teaching career.
Sister is survived by special cousins, Karen Scholeen and Denise Labedz, both from Illinois, and Mary Jo Koppenhofer and Amy Humphrey, both of Indianapolis.
Due to the restrictions on group meetings, no public wake and funeral is scheduled. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence on October 21.
