William “Bill” E. Hiatt, 82, of Staunton, Indiana passed away, unexpectedly, at home, on October 23, 2020.

He was born on November 8, 1937, in Terre Haute, Indiana the son of Harold S. and Frances (Fox) Hiatt. Bill graduated from Gerstmeyer High School with the class of 1956. Following high school Bill began working with AT&T. He worked there for 45 years before retiring. He belonged to the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Union and was an officer for 21 years.

Bill was a charter member of Eastside Christian Church. During his tenure Bill held various offices and positions in the church including Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. Bill was a member of the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and held different positions within the department, including Fire Chief. Bill was on the Staunton Town Board as a member and president of the board for 3 years. For the last several years, Bill was an active member with Wabash Valley Master Gardeners’ Association (WVMGA) and Friends of the Arboretum Inc. (Holly Arboretum) where held various offices, including president.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Frances Hiatt; his wife Janice Hiatt whom he married on September 28, 1956; brothers Byron Hiatt and Harold Hiatt.

Bill is survived by his children: Doug Hiatt (Mary) of Fort Wayne, Kathy Walden (Robert) of Staunton, Jim Hiatt (Melissa) of Staunton, and Nancy Bensen (Steve) of Zionsville; grandchildren: Nicole Markle (Jim), Cherie Hiatt, Jessica Little (Scott), Brian Walden (Elizabeth), Robert Hiatt, Dana Ercay (Tayfun), Tyler Bensen (Ashley), Lauren Bensen, Kyle Bensen; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister Mabel Viveros; a brother Myron Hiatt; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family member and friends.

Visitation will be at Lawson – Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, Indiana on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 4-8pm. Services will be at the funeral home, on Friday, at 11:00am with Pastor Bill Brock officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
