Mary Jo Swalls, 88, of Brazil, Indiana passed away at Union Hospital, on April 23, 2021 following complications of a stroke.

Mary Jo was born on October 26, 1932, in Terre Haute, Indiana the daughter of Raymond and Joy (Trueblood) Lanning. She graduated from Glenn High School in 1950. She met Gene Swalls her senior year at a 4-H cookout. They were married October 22, 1953 and she cherished the 66 years they had together. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2020. They raised three sons together Dennis, Ken, and Alan.

Mary Jo worked at Allis Chalmers, Columbia Records, Rexall Drugs and the Wooden Key. The job she found most rewarding was that of a mother to her 3 sons and wife to her husband, Gene. Together they enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, traveling to Branson, and eating out.

Mary Jo loved all animals, especially cats and dogs. She also enjoyed sitting in the sun in her swing.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Joy Lanning, her husband Gene Swalls, her son Dennis Swalls, and a brother Carl Lanning.

Survivors include her sons Ken Swalls (Cindy Watts) and Alan Swalls (Robin); daughter-in-law Connie Swalls; grandchildren: USAF Captain Clint Swalls (Kori), Jaleen Royer (Justin), Ryan Swalls (Merideth), Adam Swalls (Abby), Hannah Nichols (Jacob), Sarah Swalls and Hunter Collins (Trisha); 8 great-grandchildren: Tate Swalls, Julian Swalls, Lanning Royer, Donald Gene “Duke” Swalls, Walter Kent Swalls, Ethan Conrad Swalls, Cora Lynn Swalls, and River Collins; brother Don Lanning (Carolyn); as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.

With regard to Mary Jo’s love of animals, donations may be made to an animal rescue of your choosing, in her memory.

Graveside services will be held at Clearview Cemetery, on Monday, April 26, 2021 at 1:00pm.
