Charles L. “Chuck” Fortner, 68 of Marshall, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in his residence surrounded by his wife and family.  He was born in Terre Haute on September 20, 1952 to Charles A. Fortner and Dolores M. Pruiett Fortner.

Chuck was a retired clerk with the U.S. Postal Service.  His memberships include the National Rifle Association, Universal Young Men’s Club, Son’s of the American Legion, Marshall VFW Post # 5975, Marshall American Legion Post # 90, and the Terre Haute Moose Lodge.  He enjoyed drag racing, fishing, gun collecting, classic muscle cars, and coin collecting.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Dawna Rankin Fortner, his father Charles A. Fortner, as well as two brothers, Brad Fortner and Steve Fortner, special niece Robin Maurer (husband Rusty) and their daughters Jada and Jasmyn.  Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Kenny Rankin, and two sisters-in-law, Loretta Burger and Diane Hunt and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Dolores and Art Shell, a brother, Brent Fortner, two sisters-in-law; Cathy Fortner and Joyce Rankin, as well as a brother-in-law, Terry Burger.

Funeral services will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Friday, August 13, 2021 at 1:00 PM.  Burial will follow in Pleasantview Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 11:00 AM until time of service in the funeral home.  The family would like to give a special thanks to friends and neighbors Lois Brosman, John and Janet Noe, Bretaney and Aaron Noe, and Fred and Brenda Miller for the care and compassion shown to Chuck during his illness.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Riley Children’s Hospital.
