Richard E. “Doc” Stephens, 84, of Terre Haute passed away late Friday evening, April 15, 2022. He was a teacher with the Vigo County School Corporation having taught at several areas schools but mostly as an Anatomy and Physiology teacher at Terre Haute North Vigo High School. He inspired many students to pursue careers in the medical field. Richard was born August 12, 1937 in Murphysboro, IL to Robert E. Stephens and Alberta Schimpf Stephens.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jane Ann Griffith Stephens; sons, Daniel J. Stephens (Linda) and David B. Stephens both of Terre Haute; daughter, Katherine J. Thompson (David) of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Kera, Stephanie, Joshua and Megan; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Dr. James Stephens (Elaine) of Staunton, IN; sister, Patricia “Patti Sue” Hughes of West Terre Haute; a brother-in-law, John Griffith of California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Ricky” Lee Stephens and Angel Pine; a brother, Robert Stephens; and a sister, Marcia Rose.

Richard was a 1955 graduate of State High School and earned both his Bachelor’s degree and his Master’s degree from Indiana State University. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Richard was an avid bowler having bowled several “300” games and loved to ride his motorcycle and play golf.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Thursday, April 21, 2022 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Thursday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the funeral home.
