Stephen Thomas Stapp, 69, of Centerpoint, Indiana passed away peacefully at home, with his loving wife by his side, on May 11, 2022 following an extended illness.
Steve was born on May 17, 1952, in New Castle, Indiana the son of Rev. Thomas E. Stapp and Reba J. (Bow) Stapp. Steve graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1970. Following high school Steve worked for Marvin Campbell Construction. He went on to work for Brazil Coal and Clay as a drill operator for 12 years. He retired from Bemis as a machine operator after 25 years of service to the company.
Steve was a faithful servant for the Lord. His faith and trust in Jesus Christ were the foundation of his life. He enjoyed studying and teaching God’s Word. He also enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and making fond memories with his grandsons as he taught them his fishing, gun safety, carpentry and driving skills.
He married Jan (Rissler) Stapp on September 21, 1973 at Union United Methodist Church. He and Jan were blessed with 48 wonderful years together which included two beautiful daughters, Erin and Evie, two cherished sons-in-law, Jeff and Brad and six growing grandsons. Steve embraced the good times and the hard times through love and laughter with Jan. Steve continually practiced his “country carpenter” skills and made Jan’s many projects possible. They owned and operated Company’s Coming Dining House in Brazil from 1990-2001.
Steve used his gifts and talents to help others and assist in the mission of the church. In his younger years he sang in the Living Water Quartet. He loved worship and singing. He also led Sunday School classes and small groups throughout his lifetime and cherished the friendships made through the years.
Despite his failing heart condition, he was a man of grit. In 2019 he built a home with the loving help of brothers-in-law Forrest and Neil and many friends and family in rural Centerpoint on the property of daughter and son-in-law, Evie and Brad. After moving in, the beautiful country setting, “where the wild turkeys roam”, proved theraputic to Steve’s health
He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Thomas Stapp and Reba Stapp; sister-in-law Teresa Moore.
Steve is survived by his wife Jan Stapp; two daughters and their husbands Erin and Jeff Huttinger and Evie and Brad Ogborn; six grandboys: Ben Huttinger, Joel Huttinger, Spencer Huttinger, Lou Ogborn, Ansel Ogborn, and Clay Ogborn; sisters and brothers-in-law: Carol and Forrest Crowe, Gale and Jeff Mair, Robert Moore, Neil and Cheryl Rissler, Phil and Joan Rissler, and Roy and Cathy Rissler; as well as many special nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be at Union United Methodist Church, 780 E County Rd 600 N, Brazil, IN 47834, on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. Services will be held on Wednesday at 4:00 PM with Pastor Tim Minks, of The Life Center, in Terre Haute, officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery.
