Sandra Lou Brown (nee McVey) has passed away on the morning of May 21,
2022, at home surrounded by her loved ones. After a long, fourteen year battle
with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, she finally succumbed to
the disease. Sandra was born on Oct 11, 1941, to Kenneth Eugene McVey, Sr.
and Jesse Alma McVey (nee Mason) in Richmond, IN. Sandy spent most of her
life living in the Terre Haute and Brazil, IN area, but also briefly resided in
Lakeland, FL, were she graduated from high school in 1959.
As a teenager, she sang in churches with a gospel trio called the McVey’s with
a brother, Peter and a sister, Janet. Peter went on to perform with the gospel
quartet The Ambassadors in the 1970’s. Sandy was a ravenous reader and
crossword puzzler until almost the very end, reading several books a day and
any crosswords she could find. She also enjoyed sewing, yard work, flower
gardening and oddly enough, interior decorating, specifically painting and
wallpapering, although the cancer did finally slow down her physical activities.
Over the years, Sandy worked at the CBS record plant in the 1960’s and
1970’s, as an elementary teacher’s aide in the 1980’s and as a contract
housekeeper in 1990’s. She also worked at several cashier positions and in the
bakery at Great Scot on Locust.
Sandy was preceded in death by both of her parents, Kenneth and Jesse. In
addition, she was also preceded by her brother, Peter McVey. She is survived
by: her husband of 62 years, Joseph T. Brown, of Terre Haute; two sisters, Janet
Fields, of Terre Haute and Carol Kirby, of Gas City, IN; three brothers, Kenneth
(Skip) McVey, Jr., of Terre Haute, David McVey, of Pasadena, FL and Randall
McVey, of Ocala, FL; two sons, Lee Brown, of Terre Haute and Matthew Brown,
of Newburgh, IN; nine grand children, Ian Shapin and Kaitlin Shapin, of Las
Vegas, NV, Dalton Brown, of Colorado Springs, CO, Nicholas Brown, of Wells,
MN, Autumn Brown, Logan Brown and Ty Brown, of Newburgh, IN; one great-
grand child, Rypley Brown, of Colorado Springs, CO.
