Clay County, Indiana – On Saturday October 1, 2022 at or around 1:51 am the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in regards to a shooting which had occurred in rural southern Clay County.   The first caller, later identified as Leah Butters DOB 11-25-1967 of Clay City, stated that she had been shot by her boyfriend and needed help.  When Deputies and other first responders arrived they began life saving measures for multiple gunshot wounds.  As a result of the injuries Ms. Butters was air lifted to an Indianapolis hospital where she is still listed in critical condition.

Shortly after the first 911 call a second 911 call was received.  During this call dispatchers were informed that multiple males had been shot and were driving to the hospital.  As the three men were traveling north on SR 59 they eventually met with STAR Ambulance at the Pilot Gas Station.  As medical staff rendered aid to two males with gunshot wounds it was determined that one male, later identified as Tim Haydon DOB 10-28-1969 of Coal City, was deceased as a result of his wounds.  The second male, later identified as Tim’s son Jerick Hayden DOB 2-25-1999 of Coal City, was treated and transported by ambulance to a Terre Haute hospital.

Although the investigation is still ongoing Deputies believe the domestic incident began earlier in the evening when personal property was damaged.  It is believed that the three men went to Ms. Butters home heavily armed to confront her on the damage.  It was during this altercation that several shots were fired by multiple people that ultimately left two injured and one deceased.
