
Harold Lee Garrett, 78, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away October 6, 2022. He was born July 10, 1944, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Pat Clay and Mary Frances Colloway. He attended Gerstmeyer High School. He joined the job core training program which took him to California for two years to learn trade skills. He returned to Terre Haute and was employed at Dennis Trucking, where he worked as a heavy equipment apprentice. Harold became the first African American to become a heavy equipment operator at Haley Brothers construction. Harold married the love of his life Norma Jean (Wilson) Garrett, and they raised three beautiful daughters. Harold enjoyed the winter season; the time for him and his buddies to hunt with their dogs, to watch football, and he was not to be distributed during the football games. Harold was lovingly called “Chick” by his family and close friends. Harold was a faithful member of the Masonic Lodge Prince Hall #4 for several years. Harold was surrounded by his loving family on October 6, 2022, when he left his earthly body. Harold was proceeded in death by his parents; the love of his life Norma Garrett; son Harold Garrett Jr. and daughter Marlene Garrett; two brothers James C. Garrett and Donald E. Garrett. He is survived by his daughters Rebecca Lawson (Dwayne), Darla Woods (Herman), and Angela Garrett; grandchildren Paryis, Otis, Dwayne Jr., Bryce, Brielle, Orion, Dorcas, Devin, and Dawn; great grandchildren Rylon, Maliayah, Rico, Gabrielle, Xavior, Elaiyah, Angelina, Addison, and Aaron; great great grandchild Rylon Jr.; and siblings Betty J. Cooper, Hiawatha Garrett, Michael Garrett (Lori), and Richard Garrett. A celebration of life will be on October 22, 2022, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2401, 7th Ave, Terre Haute, Indiana. Visitation will be from 11:00a.m. until 12:00p.m., service to follow officiating Reverend Michael Russell. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery.
