
John David Hemminghouse, 90, passed away in his home, on October 22, 2022, with his family caring for him in his final days. John was born October 9, 1932 in Marshall, IL to John Henry and Alice Malloy Hemminghouse. He married Mary Rose Burke on October 31, 1953. Survivors include his sister, Rose Marie Slater; sister-in-law Peggie Hemminghouse; 4 children, Polly Jeffers (Jimmie), John E. Hemminghouse (Terri), Burke Hemminghouse (El Dete), and Michael Hemminghouse. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren Benjamin Jeffers, Matthew Jeffers (Nancy), Kara Lovell (Jeremy), Neil Hemminghouse (Leslie), Lee Hemminghouse (Rachel), and Bridget Hemminghouse and 8 great-grandchildren, Ryne Jeffers, John B. Jeffers, Madelynn Jeffers, Coco Hemminghouse, C. J.Hemminghouse, Luke Hemminghouse, James Redman and Rose Redman. John is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rose on April 5, 2019, a son, Eric Hemminghouse, his parents, and siblings Timmy Hemminghouse, William Hemminghouse, and Madeline Machango.
He graduated from Wiley High School. From childhood he had a lifelong interest in art. He owned his own business and earned his living as a sign painter. After retirement he started woodcarving as a hobby, sharing his treasured carvings with many friends and family. Through the years he’s received many accolades and awards for his woodcarvings. He hosted a Monday night carving group in his shop for many years. He was also a member of the Wabash Valley Art Guild.
In addition to his legacy of the woodcarvings, he also built his Lincoln cabin with the help of his friends. It was one of his favorite places and will remain a family getaway for generations to come.
John was a kind, peaceful person and a loving husband and father. He always enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends and being outdoors. He was a founding member of the Brothers of the Woods. Many people called him their friend.
Funeral services will be at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St. Terre Haute, IN. with visitation on Friday, October 28, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00 and funeral service on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 11:00. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Marshall, IL. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Terre Haute Humane Shelter.
