Terre Haute, In. – Detectives from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post have been requested by Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident that took place on December 1, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m., at 1644 1st Avenue in Terre Haute.

Officers of the Terre Haute Police Department were dispatched to 1644 1st Avenue, in reference to a domestic situation between a husband and wife.  A Terre Haute Police Officer arrived on scene a short time later.  Upon the arrival of the officer, female screams for help could be heard coming from inside the residence.  The officer made forced entry into the residence and located a male subject with a knife.  The Terre Haute Police Officer gave verbal commands for the male subject to drop the knife, but the subject disregarded the commands and advanced towards the officer, still wielding the knife.  The officer then fired his police-issued weapon at the subject, resulting in the subject being shot.

Medical assistance was immediately rendered at the scene, and the subject was subsequently transported to a local hospital in Terre Haute.  However, the subject succumbed to the injuries.  The subject has been identified as James Ready, age 42, of Terre Haute, Indiana.  Family has been notified.

A female victim from this incident was also transported from the scene to a local hospital in Terre Haute, with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Terre Haute Police officer involved in this incident is Patrol Officer Adam Noel, eight years of service. Officer Noel has been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in officer-involved shootings.

The investigation is being conducted by Indiana State Police detectives, Angie Hahn, Don Curtis, and Mike Featherling, with the assistance of Lieutenant Jeff Hearon, First Sergeant Brian Maudlin, CSI Sergeant Brandon Mullen, and CSI Sergeant Michael Organ of the Putnamville State Police Post.

This is an active and ongoing Indiana State Police investigation.  There is no further information to release at this time.  Upon completion of their investigation, Indiana State Police detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
