TERRE HAITE — Experience “Great Music! Close to Home” on Saturday April 1, 2023, at 7:30pm with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra for Musical Treasures! Hear great music – many styles and periods drawn from audience requests, familiar favorites, and works featuring our THSO musicians. Both the players and the music are musical treasures!

The THSO will perform several works including Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, Fauré’s Sicilienne, Rossini’s The Silken Ladder, Smetana’s The Moldau, Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave Overture, and Coates’ Knightsbridge March. Several musicians from the orchestra will be highlighted during the concert including Principal Oboe Rebecca McGuire, Principal Flute Angela Reynolds, Principal Clarinet Samantha Johnson-Helms, and more.

The most anticipated piece of the evening, however, is Brian Sadler’s Journey for Tuba and Orchestra featuring the symphony’s Principal Tuba Glen Dimick. Described as “epic,” “fun,” and “one of the best pieces written for tuba,” audiences will love this rock n’ roll style piece that sounds like the score of a hit action movie.

Audiences will also enjoy Glen’s quirky personality and fun-loving nature. In his bio he writes:

Playing the tuba may not be the only questionable life choice for Glen Dimick, but it has easily had the farthest-reaching consequences. Born in southern Wisconsin with about six terrifying months remaining in the 1970s, Glen grew up with such tuba-related incidents as studying with Randall Ruback, formerly of the Rome Radio Orchestra, and Alan Baer, now principal tuba of the New York Philharmonic. Departing Wisconsin for Indiana, Glen completed his undergraduate at the IU Jacobs School of Music with Daniel Perantoni. Glen then detoured north to complete a Master of Music at DePaul University with Floyd Cooley – and in doing so secured his Chicago cell number, which he will never give up regardless of how irrelevant it becomes.

Glen served as Indiana State University’s tuba instructor from 2009 to 2016, while performing the same duties at the University of Indianapolis. He has served as principal tuba of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic for 14 years. During this time, Glen has also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and Indianapolis Ballet Orchestra. He also plays with the THSO Brass Quintet, serving the community with outreach on a more intimate level.

When he isn’t educating his neighbors on how peaceful their lives were prior to a tubist moving in, Glen designs radiation treatments for the Indianapolis VA Medical Center. Despite the quality of this biography, he is an avid writer. Glen also enjoys getting lost on hiking trails and moving each of his five phenomenal daughters to various points around Bloomington.

Artistic Director and Conductor, Dr. David Bowden, shares his excitement for Musical Treasures on April 1st and the future of the THSO. “Glen and all of our superbly talented musicians are treasures to be celebrated. Our community is blessed to have the THSO, the oldest professional orchestra in Indiana and soon to be celebrating our 100th Anniversary Season. It’s just 2 seasons away!”

This concert is proudly sponsored by Union Health, Thompson Thrift, Old National Bank, and Ron & Marsha Danielson.
