TERRE HAUTE – On Monday at approximately 12:51 P.M., a patrol officer was out on a custody dispute call in the 2800 block of Dean Avenue when he heard what appeared to be a female yelling stop to the west of his location. The officer then observed a dark-colored Chrysler minivan traveling east in the alley south of Dean and West of 29th Street. The officer then observed the minivan begin traveling at a high rate of speed through the alley and turn north on 29th Street in front of him. The officer observed the van fail to stop at multiple stops signs on 29th street and recklessly pass other vehicles. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle as it traveled from College Avenue onto Brown Avenue, and then west onto Ohio Boulevard. The vehicle failed to stop and continued to speed westbound ignoring the red light at 25th Street and striking a pick-up truck that was traveling northbound.
Both the driver of the Chrysler minivan and the driver of the pick-up truck suffered significant injuries and were life-lined to an out of area hospital. A canvas of the 2800 block of Dean Avenue located the original female heard by the officer. Officers learned the original yelling had been the result of the female becoming upset with the male driver for driving recklessly with her child in the car. The incident is under investigation, and the Indiana State Police Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. At this point, we are not releasing the names of the drivers to allow notification of family to their conditions.
