TERRE HAUTE – Brandon Sakbun will be the Democratic challenger to Mayor Duke Bennett (R) in November’s General election.

Sakbun defeated Democrat Pat Goodwin by a 54-46 percent margin in Tuesday’s Primary.

Mayor Duke Bennett became mayor in 2008 and is the third longest serving mayor in Terre Haute’s history. He graduated from Terre Haute North, Ivy Tech and Wesleyan University.

Sakbun is a newcomer to Terre Haute politics, although he grew up here. After graduating from Terre Haute South, he attended Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and trained to commission as an Army officer.

In 2018 he commissioned into the Army as a Second Lieutenant and served almost five years and rose to the rank of Captain.

He now serves in the Indiana National Guard.

No Republicans filed for city council seats in Terre Haute.

In races for city council Democrats nominated:

City Council-At-Large: Curtis A. DeBaun IV defeated George J. Azar and Tammy Boland.

District 1: Kandace Hinton was the winner over Amy Auler.

District 2: Amanda Thompson became the nominee in November. She defeated Clark Cowden.

District 3: Cheryl A. Loudermilk ran unopposed.

District 4: Todd Nation defeated Andrew Beddow and R. Carter.

District 5: Jim Chalos was the winner defeating Jimmie Jeffers and Ralph M. Leck.

District 6: Anthony Dinkel defeated Jennifer L. Buttrey-Dammann and Cathy Frakes.

In Clinton, Incumbent Mayor Jack Gilfoy Jr. defeated Grant Martin Shortridge 63-37 percent in the Democratic Party Primary.

Mayor Gilfoy is completing his third term in office and points to his record.

“Not one time in 12 years have we ever been in the red at the end of the year in any of our budget lines,” he stated on social media.
