BRAZIL – A large sewer project by the city of Brazil will receive a big help from the county.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Clay County Redevelopment Commission, members voted unanimously to commit 900-thousand dollars to a sewer project at the interstate.
The project will enable businesses south of I-70 to connect to the city sewer system.
The city wants to see property at the I-70 and State Road 59 interchange developed and increase the city’s tax revenue.
After a meeting between city and county leaders and an accounting firm, it was determined the 900-thousand dollar shortfall could be met by using TIF money over the next eight or nine years. The TIF money is captured from property taxes in the area and used for projects such as sewer lines.
The Redevelopment Commission approved the resolution which was written by city attorney Traci Orman and county attorney Lou Britton.
Britton said there were safeguards written into the resolution.
Jim Coffenberry, a consultant for the county, said the new sewer could eventually benefit the town of Center Point.
