BRAZIL – At Wednesday’s meeting of the Brazil Board of Public Works and Safety, a contract was signed with Koorsen Fire and Security to set up an alarm system in the baby box at the fire department.

The baby box is there to provide a safe haven for unwanted babies and to give their mothers an alternative to abandoning children.

A woman can place her baby in the box and close the door without being confronted by anyone asking questions.

When the alarm system is installed, it will signal dispatchers, who can then alert officials to remove the baby and provide for the baby’s care.

The Koorsen alarm will cost the city $50 a month.

In other business:

Assistant Fire Chief Toby Archer did not have statistics to share with the board but said, “It takes more than one person to replace the chief in his time of grief.”

He was referring to Fire Chief Jake Bennett who lost a son in a one-car accident on Father’s Day.

Archer said a new firefighter has been hired and will begin on July 28.

Police Chief Clint McQueen told the board the city council has approved the purchase of eight new police vehicles but it will take “a couple months” for them to be outfitted with equipment and decals placed on the vehicles.

McQueen said the department is in the final phase of hiring a new officer to replace Todd Stemm who has retired.
