Mary Alice Johnson, 92, of Terre Haute, went to her eternal home with Jesus on November 21, 2023 surrounded by loved ones.   Mary was born November 3,1931 to Walter Hightower and Virgie Martin Hightower in Tom, Oklahoma. She was a long-standing member of Clay City Assembly of God and in retirement attended Hot Springs Village Assembly of God.  After her marriage to Kenneth Johnson, they moved to Clay City, IN where they continued to live until their retirement.  Mary was a homemaker and loved raising her children on the family farm where she loved to cook and bake.  She always had plenty of southern cooking to share with anyone that might stop by.  She also spent a lot of time working outside and taking care of her cows.   Mary was a beautiful seamstress.  She made colorful outfits for her husband to wear golfing.   She sewed for her children and grandchildren and for anyone that  needed her talent to help them make an outfit.  She was a leader throughout her life in all things, but especially in church.  She wrote several plays over the years as well as directed them for her churches Christmas , Easter and youth programs.  She sewed costumes for them as well.  She enjoyed singing and playing her tambourine in worship service.  When her children were older, she worked outside of the home as a supervisor for the former Windbreaker division of Van Huesen.   Mary exuberated joy in all she did and always had a smile on her face.  Her personality matched her many purple outfits and accessories, as this was her favorite color.  She was an avid golfer and won many tournaments.  In her later years, she loved to play bingo and cards.  She was known for all of her bingo winnings and showing them off and sharing them with all who visited.  One of Mary’s favorite Bible verses was Mark 12:30 “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and all your strength”, and that Mary did.   Mary is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and one grandson, baby Benjamin.   She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Johnson whom she married in 1952, her children, Holly Gage (Steve) , Alan Johnson and Teresa Johnson.  Her grandchildren; Shannon (Tom) Cannon, Shane (Connie) Johnson, Megan (Ethan) Cooper, Logan (Liz) Gage, Matthew Philley, Mesha Philley and Micah Philley.    Twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren , whom she adored.   She is also survived by a sister, Tina Oman as well as many nieces and nephews.  Graveside services are scheduled for Sunday, November 26,2023 at 2:00 pm at Maple Grove Cemetery in Clay City, IN.   Jeff Fritz will be officiating.   The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Mary’s extended family at The Commons of Honey Creek who loved and cared for Mary so well.  They would also like to thank Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their care and support.  Services arranged by Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St. Terre Haute, IN 47804.  Online condolences may be made at
