Gretta Sue Vanzo, 84 of Brazil, formerly of the Diamond area, passed away April 2, 2024, at 12:05am at Terre Haute Regional Hospital following a recent surgery. She was born April 22, 1939, in Clay County, the daughter of John Squire Mershon and Frieda Stevenson Mershon. As a young girl, the family lived on the Eel River, and she grew up fishing and hunting with her siblings. Later, they moved into Brazil, and she graduated from Brazil High School, Class of 1958. She later graduated from Indiana Business School.

As a young woman, Sue worked at Chesty Foods in Terre Haute. She then used her skills as a legal secretary for Merrell Thompson for several years. Later in life, she helped with organizing the care for her aunt. Sue has always enjoyed being in nature, listening to the sounds, teaching her grandchildren about such things, working in the garden and cherishing her first great grand child.

Sue and the family spent many years showing animals in 4-H. Many of family vacations were taken during the Parke County and Indiana State Fair. Later, Sue traveled to various county fairs across Indiana, pulling trucks with her husband Jack and son Jimmy, Sue enjoyed meeting with friends for the past years and joined Karaoke. She was quite talented with her singing, and she met several people from all walks of life. She was a member of the American Legion Post #2, VFW #1127, Brazil Eagles, and the Moose.

She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church and later attended Christ Community Church and Grace Chapel.

Survivors include her children, James “Jimmy” Vanzo (Candie Robbins), and Jacqueline Chastain (Jared); grandchildren, Kade Chastain (Taylor), Kolten Chastain (Ellie Jackman) and great-grandson, Kohen Chastain; a large extended family and her four-legged friends, “Buddy” and “Freckles.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Squire, and Frieda Mershon; her husband James “Jack” Vanzo in 1989; one sister, Joyce Ann Mercer; three brothers, Ben Mershon, Bill Mershon and Hubbard Mershon.

Services will be held on Saturday at 1:00pm at Lawson-Miller Chapel with Pastor Tim Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11-1. Post a note of condolence at www.lawson-millerchapel.com
