
Karen Sue Smith, 76, of Brazil, Indiana, passed away on July 6, 2023, while staying at Hutsonwood Health Care.
Karen was born on November 7, 1946, in Coal City, Indiana, the daughter of Elmer R. and Betty Jean (Baker) Spelts. Karen graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1964. Over the years, Karen worked at Columbia House, Vigo County School Corporation as a teacher’s aide, Kasameyer Glass in Terre Haute, and The Morris Plan. Karen was also co-founder and office manager of Smith’s Small Engines.
Karen spent many years volunteering for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was involved in various social clubs including the Vigo County Home Economics Club and Bunco Club.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Betty Spelts.
Karen is survived by her son Jamey Smith of Brazil; her daughter Jennifer Headlee and husband Chad of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandchildren: Samantha Smith, Justine Smith, Charlee Headlee, and Rowan Headlee; siblings: Elmer Spelts Jr., Larry Spelts, Jimmy Spelts, Linda Bush, Paula Stantz, Regina Spelts, and Marcia Spelts Lambert; as well as several extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 East Eighth St. Clay City, Indiana 47834, on Monday, July 10, 2023, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Services will follow at 1:00 PM with burial to be held at Fiscus Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana 1100 Girl Scout Lane Terre Haute, Indiana 47807.
