
Douglas Scott Waite, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024, after an extended battle with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 72, in Clay City, Indiana. Born on April 30, 1951, in Wabash, Indiana. Douglas was a man of intelligence, love, and humor, whose presence brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
A graduate of Clay City Jr./Sr. High School in 1969, Douglas continued his education at Ivy Tech, where he earned an associate’s degree in electronics. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a successful career as a communications technician with GTE, where he dedicated many years of service, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Douglas’s passion for life was evident in his diverse interests and hobbies. He was a devoted fan of NASCAR, often spending family vacations at races, and had a particular fondness for the drag races at the US Nationals in Indianapolis. Annual trips to Holiday World with his wife and sons were a treasured tradition, filled with laughter and memories. His love for building and creating was a constant throughout his life, always immersed in a project, whether it was rebuilding a classic 1968 Camaro with his son Steven or crafting something new with his own hands.
A man of faith, Douglas was an active member of the First United Church of Christ in Clay City. He served the church in various capacities over the years, demonstrating his commitment to his community and his desire to make a positive impact.
Douglas’s love for cars extended beyond restoration projects; he enjoyed working on them in any capacity, always willing to lend a hand or share his expertise. His eye for beauty was also reflected in his landscaping skills, taking particular pleasure in mowing and maintaining his property.
Fishing was another of Douglas’s simple joys, a pastime that allowed him moments of tranquility and reflection. Sports played a significant role in his life, not only as a spectator, cheering on his favorite teams, but also actively engaging in sports with his sons and grandson. His great sense of humor shone through in these moments, as he gave everything and everyone amusing nicknames, endearing himself even more to those around him.
Douglas’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those he touched. His intelligence shone through in every aspect of his life, from his professional endeavors to the intricate projects he undertook. His loving nature enveloped his family, creating an environment of warmth and security. And his handiness ensured that he was not only capable of fixing things but also of building bonds that would last a lifetime.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Audrey Waite.
Douglas is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Dr. Adel Marlane Inman Waite, two sons, Steven Douglas Waite (Jade), and Andrew Scott Waite, one grandson, Corbin Scott Waite, siblings, David Waite (Joannie), Nancy Waite Allumbaugh, Bill Waite (Brenda), Carol Waite Gaskins (Rick), Gary Waite (Roseanne), and Sharon Waite McHenry, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in laws. Douglas shared a special connection with his mother-in-law, Mary Inman, who also survives.
As we bid farewell to Douglas Scott Waite, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life filled with passion, creativity, and an unquenchable spirit that inspired everyone he met. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will continue to bring smiles to the faces of his loved ones for years to come.
Douglas’s life will be commemorated in a service that reflects the love and respect he garnered throughout his remarkable journey. His story, one of dedication, joy, and an unwavering zest for life, will be remembered and cherished forever.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 5th from 10 A.M. – 1 P.M. at First United Church of Christ, 6414 County Road 1550 in Clay City. A funeral service will begin at 1 P.M. Burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery across the road from the church.
