She is the only daughter of Melvin and Irene Barnett born on July 7, 1922 in Washington County, IN. She grew up in Mitchell, IN a place that remained close to her heart throughout her life. After the war ended, Martha and her husband lived in Evanston, IL and Arlington, VA finally settling in Terre Haute to raise three children: Susan, Sally and Thomas. She worked at the YMCA and Bowsher Insurance Agency. Martha and her family moved to Parke County, Indiana where she lived for more than 50 years. She was an active volunteer in the Presbyterian Church, Sigma Kappa, The Guild at Union Hospital Clinton, The League of Women Voters, HELP, Newcomer’s Club, local bridge groups and numerous other organizations in Vigo and Parke County.
