Frederick William Garrison, 89, of Brazil, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly, on April 30, 2022.
Fred was born on April 23, 1933, in Harmony, Indiana, the son of Frederick Garrison and Anna Ruth (Miller) Garrison. He graduated from Van Buren High School. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Navy where he served as a radar technician.
As a civilian, he worked at A & P, in Terre Haute, for 20 years, retiring as a foreman. His second career was as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service to which he worked for 25 years before retiring. He also helped his father-in-law Talbott “Spud” Girton at Girton’s Feed Store and as a retirement job he worked at Jim’s Discount Tobacco Shop for several years. He was also a long-time member of the Harmony and Knightsville Sewer Board. He was a 50 plus year member of the Knightsville and Brazil Masonic Lodge
When he wasn’t working he enjoyed keeping up with his grandkids and great grandkids sporting and extracurricular events. He also loved watching IU Basketball, mushroom hunting, attending auctions, knife collecting, and had recently enjoyed birdwatching. He was a member of the American Legion to which he attended regularly. He especially enjoyed going to the VFW for the biscuits and gravy on Monday mornings. He was a long-time member of the Calcutta Cemetery Association Board of Directors. Fred enjoyed volunteering for the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Harmony Community Church and had more recently been attending Benwood Mt. Lebanon Church.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Anna Ruth Garrison; his wife Barbara “Bobbie” Garrison; siblings: Eva Gottsche, Johnny Garrison, Kenny Garrison, and Patricia Stinson.
Survivors include his children: Frederick William “Bill” Garrison and wife Wendy, Thomas Talbott Garrison (Toni Bullock), Becky Proffitt (Ed), and Steve Ward (Christa); grandchildren: Brooke Lee (Jamie), Lindsey Mershon (Matt), Justin Garrison (Carrie), Cody Garrison (Brittany), Jordan Garrison (Erica), Shannon Lutes (Kevin), Mandi Eldridge (Trent), Austin Proffitt (Jamie), Talbott Fisher (Kayla), Wesley Proffitt (Tia Kirchner), Megan Bryan (Robbie), and Hannah Ward; great-grandchildren: Brady Lee, Jace Lee, Bella Lee, Bryce Lee, Morgan Mershon, Mason Mershon, Leyton Mershon, Liam Mershon, Keegan Garrison, Nolan Garrison, Cain Garrison, Ryker Garrison, Laynie Garrison, Cooper Garrison, Nash Garrison, Anders Garrison, Evie Lutes, Jaiden Lutes, Maisie Eldridge, Brooklyn Eldridge, Trey Eldridge, Ethan Proffitt, Jasmine Proffitt, Jamison Fisher, Hayden Fisher, and Raeley Fisher and a sister Saundra Wallace.
