VIGO COUNTY, Ind – Now that all of the funding is in place, the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board is moving forward on plans for the new downtown convention center in Terre Haute. On Tuesday the Vigo County Council unanimously approved an increase in the county’s innkeeper tax from 6.5% to 8%. A food and beverage tax has already been passed.

That increase will provide funds to the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau that will allow them to meet its $5 million share of the proposed $25 million convention center.

The city of Terre Haute and Vigo County will each provide $10 million to the project that will come from a local income tax for economic development.

The CIB has now approved a more than $1.6 million contract with Indianapolis-based CSO Architects for design, construction documents and construction administration services.

We now know the structure will be about 35,000 square feet with plans for nearly 700 parking spaces spread between two parking garages, and a connecting hotel.

The project is slated to be located between 7th and 9th street and Cherry and Wabash.
