Employee Arrested After Theft From Dollar General In Shelburn

SHELBURN, Ind – Monday (1-28-19) the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Dollar General store in Shelburn, reporting an overnight office break-in.

A store employee said that they had arrived for work in the early morning and found front door unlocked and the burglar alarm had been deactivated, the safe had been opened and the hard drive from the video security system.

There were no signs of forced entry to the store or safe.

The manager believed several thousand dollars in cash was missing from the safe.

Police thought the crime could have been committed by an employee.

Officers reviewed a list of employees who had keys to the building, knew the alarm code, and had the combination to the safe.

28 year old Dustin J. Cottrell, of Shelburn eventually admitted to the crime and police recovered a garbage bag, containing what appeared to be several thousand dollars in cash.

Cottrell is being held in the Sullivan County Jail felony charges of burglary and theft.

His initial bond is set at $23,000., with ten percent allowed.
