TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Progress was made Thursday evening by the Terre Haute City Council on a project that would see the old YMCA at 6th and Poplar take on a new life.

Commonwealth Company wants to renovate the building into apartments.

The city council was previously not in favor of a 10-year tax abatement on the project but last night did give approval to an eight-year abatement.

A representative of the company said that they were able to obtain more grant money for the project that made up the difference in the smaller abatement.

Last night (9/12/19) the council voted 5 to 3 in favor the smaller abatement.

The company must come back to the council one more time to get a confirmation vote. If the second vote passes, then they can start and hope to break ground by November.
