
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A local business owner has pleaded guilty to tax evasion.
According to federal prosecutors say Azambir Khaira didn’t pay $194,000 in federal employment taxes.
He operated mini-marts under the name Hoosier Pete, Jiffy Mart, and Express Mart.
Between April 2016 and January 2019 Federal officials say that he paid employees in cash, provided false information about his employees to his accountant, and filed false IRS forms.
Under terms of the plea agreement, Khaira is to pay back the lost tax money back to the government. He also faces a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison along with supervised release time.
