Stand-off Ends In Arrest

Terre Haute, In. – The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a criminal recklessness/resisting law enforcement incident that took place on April 2, 2022 at approximately 2:30am in the area of 3rd/Lincoln St. During a traffic stop, an occupant from inside a 2004 maroon Pontiac Grand Prix discharged a firearm towards officers, before the vehicle fled the scene. A brief pursuit then ensued. Officers were unable to immediately locate the vehicle or occupants. The vehicle has since been recovered. A person of interest in this incident was Christopher Backfish, a 23 year old white male. Information obtained indicated a possible location of Backfish being located at a residence near the area of 7th and Putnam, in Terre Haute. Backfish also had an active warrant for an unrelated offense for a parole violation. The Terre Haute Police Department special response team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation. After a lengthy standoff, Backfish exited the home and was arrested without incident. The West Terre Haute Police Department also assisted in this incident. The investigation is ongoing.
