Donald “Don” C. Englert, 72, of Terre Haute, IN, and Bradenton, FL ended a life well lived
surrounded by loved ones on July 13th, 2022.
Don was born on November 5th, 1949 in Jasper, IN to Harold and Della (Bair) Englert. He
graduated from Indiana State University in 1972 with a BS in Business. He worked for the
United States Postal Service in Terre Haute for most of his career, where he affectionately
earned the nickname “Don the Mailman”. If he was your mailman, you probably ended up at one
of his Christmas parties or on a vacation with him at some point!
Don loved being on the water, moving to Paint Mill Lake, where it didn’t take long for him to
make lifelong friendships. He would frequently rally the neighbors to set sail on the party barge,
where he developed a new nickname, “Captain Don”. While on Paint Mill he met some of his
best friends and loved doing game nights and hosting events with his daughters, Alex and
Savannah, and friends. He continued the tradition of befriending “lake people”, by recently
purchasing a cabin on Dietz Lake, where he developed a large social circle and spent more time
on his golf cart than in his home.
After retiring in 2012, he began his favorite chapter of life, “snowbirding” on Anna Maria Island,
FL. He spent his days golfing, walking the beach, riding his bike, and most recently attending
water aerobics and cardio classes. His favorite Florida activity was meeting his friends at their
daily happy hour(s) spot, where he rarely used his indoor voice. Some of his most cherished
moments were spent with his best friends at the “Dinghy Bar”, where his designated seat was
always open.
Don had a smile and laugh that were contagious and was always the life of the party! To him,
there were no strangers, only friends he hadn’t met yet. He was gifted with the ability to make
any situation lighthearted and had a joke for everything. His humor and wit were unrivaled, even
he couldn’t resist laughing at his own jokes!
Don is survived by his three daughters, Alex Speidel, Savannah Englert (Chris May), and
Melissa Manning (Parker); Grandchildren, Adaline and Aiden Speidel, Allie Pierce, Madison,
Morgan, Marin, and Mabrey Manning; Sisters, Carol Pride (Mike), Becky Gates, and Monica
Lorey (Len); Many nieces and nephews, other family members and so many friends.
Don is proceeded in death by his parents, Harold and Della (Bear) Englert, brothers Curt and
Rich Meyer, brother-in-law, Mike Gates, and sister-in-law, Shirley Meyer.
A memorial service will be held from 3:00pm-5:00pm on Sunday, July 24th, 2022 at Greiner
Funeral Home, 2005 N 13th St., Terre Haute, IN 47804.
