Charles “Chuck” L. Hoffman, age 85, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully on
September 1, 2023, at The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care.
Charles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan L. Hoffman, of Terre Haute; daughter, Christina
Rivelli, of Belleville, Illinois; daughter and her spouse, Angela M. Hoffman and Seth McConchie,
and grandchild, Nathaniel Hoffman-McConchie, of Knoxville, Tennessee; sister and brother-in-
law, Carol and Richard Eberhardy, of Racine, Wisconsin; and numerous cousins, nieces, and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Hoffman; brother and sister-in-law,
Joseph and Germaine Kaiser; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and David Hewitt; and many
friends.
Charles received a bachelor’s degree in English from Wisconsin State College-Oshkosh and then
a master’s degree in English from The University of Iowa, and he was the first in his family to
complete high school and pursue a college degree. He is most well-known for his time at
Indiana State University where he taught composition and literature for the English Department
for more than four decades. He was also respected for his time on the University Senate, where
he was recognized for his attention to detail and meticulous notes of their proceedings. In his
free time, Chuck repaired electronics, worked on electrical wiring and plumbing, and fixed cars
with and for his friends and colleagues. Charles showed his care and concern for others by
performing acts of service for them and by supporting causes that upheld the value and dignity
of all persons.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
