Raymond L. Smith Jr., affectionately known as Rooster, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, in Brazil, Indiana. Born in Akron, Ohio on May 24, 1946, Rooster was a beloved figure in his community, known for his friendly demeanor, faith-filled life, and sense of humor that brightened the lives of all who knew him.

Rooster was a proud graduate of Taylorville High School, Illinois, class of 1966. He carried his hardworking spirit into his career as a member of the Boilermaker Local 374 for over 50 years, retiring in 2001. His dedication and commitment to his work was admired by his colleagues and friends, and his influence continues to resonate within the organization.

A man of many interests, Rooster was an avid outdoorsman who found great joy in fishing and hunting. His love for nature was infectious, inspiring those around him to appreciate the beauty and serenity of the outdoors. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Rooster was a dedicated supporter of his grandchildren’s sporting events and extracurricular activities. His presence at these events was a source of great joy and encouragement for his family, reflecting his deep love and commitment to them.

Rooster’s faith was a significant part of his life, and he was very involved in the Brazil Church of the Nazarene. His active participation in the church community was a testament to his faith-filled life and his commitment to serving others. His spirit of generosity and kindness was a beacon of light in the church and his community.

Music was another source of joy for Rooster. He enjoyed the summer concert series at Forest Park, where he would often be seen tapping his foot to the rhythm, his face lit up with joy. His love for music was as infectious as his laughter, and he was always ready to share a song or a dance with those around him.

As a sports enthusiast, Rooster loved watching Colts football. He was a loyal fan, always ready to cheer on his team, whether from the comfort of his living room or the stands of the stadium. His enthusiasm was contagious, often inspiring spirited discussions and friendly debates among his friends and family.

An accomplished euchre player, Rooster loved the camaraderie and friendly competition that the game brought with his best friend, basically his brother, Terry Jones and his wife Diane. His strategic mind and jovial nature made him a favorite at the card table. His laughter and good-natured ribbing will be greatly missed during those lively euchre nights.

In every aspect of his life, Rooster embodied the qualities of friendliness, faith, and humor. His warm and welcoming nature made him a friend to many, and his robust laughter was a familiar and comforting sound to those who knew him. His faith was an inspiration to all, and his humor brought joy and lightness to every situation.

In the wake of his passing, we remember Rooster not with sadness but with gratitude for the life he lived and the love he shared. His legacy lives on in the hearts and lives of those he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire and uplift us. Rest in peace, dear Rooster. Your laughter, faith, and friendship will forever be missed.

Rooster is preceded in death by his parents, Ray L. Smith Sr. and Lovell “Terri” (Baum) Smith, his wife, Marilyn (Hughbanks) Smith, his twin daughters, Kathleen and Colleen, and his beloved dog, Ivan.

Rooster is survived by his children, Kristie McKinney (Steve), and Bryan Smith (Sara), step daughter, Autumn Weese (Brandon), grandchildren, Ashley Winkler (Justin), Chris McClure (Makayla), Brynlee and Sydnee Smith, step grandchildren, Ashlie Edington (James), Stephanie McKinney (Mike), Landon Weese, Meckayla and Dakota Randall, many great grandchildren, two sisters Edwina Torpy (Rob), and Faith Davis (Joe), as well as several nieces.

A visitation will be held Monday, November 6th from 11- 1 at Brazil Church of the Nazarene, 1002 E. National Avenue in Brazil. A funeral service will begin at 1 P.M. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
