James A. “Jimmy” Smith III, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday November 16, 2023, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Jimmy was born in Terre Haute on September 12, 1956, to James A. Smith II and Lois A. Campbell Smith. Jimmy was retired from the Terre Haute City Police Department and the retired Executive Director for the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a 1974 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School where he was an standout Basketball player. He continued his Basketball career at Indiana State University until 1978. Jimmy coached numerous Basketball teams in our community, including, Sarah Scott, Honey Creek and Terre Haute South Vigo, doing it all for the kids in our community, Jimmy’s AAU basketball teams won the State Tourney four years in a row. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Deborah Rich and his beloved son, Travis Smith in January of 2007. He is survived by his wife, Tami Dooley Smith whom he married March 15, 1986. He is survived by one daughter, Courtney Sumner (Keaton) and a “son”, Greg Oden (Sabrina). A brother, Jerry (Terri) Smith. His father and mother in-laws, Jerry and Cookie Dooley, a brother in-law, Mark Dooley (Shelly) and grandchildren; Ryker, Sawyer, Baylen and Brecken Sumner. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and several adopted children. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday November 20, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1132 South 5th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday November 19, 2023, at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47804. Visitation will also be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be; Greg Oden, Keaton Sumner, Kyle Toney, James Twitchell, Erik Smith, Michael Shanks and Stevie Krieg. Honorary Pallbearers include; Nate Mills, Jerry Smith, Mark Dooley, Terry Thimlar, Steve Nasser, Tony Tanoos and Danny Tanoos. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Travis Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, Travis Smith Memorial Scholarship at the Vigo County Education Foundation or to the charity of their choice.
