State Police Say Two Processed Thousands Of Fake Auto Titles

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –  Two Terre Haute men that have been the subject of a four year Indiana State Police investigation are to appear in Vigo County Court Thursday.

Troopers say that they received a tip that Richard Turriff was processing as many as 50,000 auto title a year though his business R&R Imports.

Police say that James Passwater’s name was on the paper work as having checked the titles to make sure that the vehicles were not stolen.

Investigators say that the handwriting did not match on all of the forms.

A third man, Matthew Newberry claims Turriff used photocopies of title applications with Passwater’s name already on them.

Turriff processed titles sold in Canada.

Passwater was a Vermillion County reserve deputy but Sheriff Mike Phelps told us that he was released from the force in 2015 when the Sheriff became aware of the investigation.
