VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind – Around 5:30 p.m. on January 2, Vermillion County deputies were called to a home on C.R. 170 West approximately 3 miles west of Clinton. According to a visitor at the home, the owner was suicidal, grabbed a loaded handgun and was talking to people that were not present.

Multiple Deputies who are all familiar with the homeowner, responded to the scene.

Officers attempted to make contact with the subject but there was no response.

The Terre Haute Police Department strategic response team (SRT) was called in and by 9:00PM, the homeowner was persuaded to come out peacefully.

After a short interview, the homeowner was taken to a medical facility for specialty treatment.

The Vermillion County Sheriff seized a total of 14 firearms from the home under Indiana’s Red Flag Law.

A judge will determine if the weapons should be returned to the owner.

There were no injuries, forced entry or damages.

Sheriff Phelps said that law enforcement has had 11 cases involving this subject with threats of harm with firearms to Law Enforcement and the public since 2012 and an open case from 2017.
