At a young age, Bob joined the family business, Girton Implement, where he wore many hats, including bookkeeping. However, his true calling lay in the nurturing of the land. As a farmer, he not only cared for his crops but also worked tirelessly with government agencies to improve the land for future generations. Bob’s dedication to his work was indicative of his character – faith-filled, selfless, and gentle.

In his later years, Bob turned his love for reading into a new venture, opening Girton’s Book Shop on the square in Greencastle. His bookstore became a cherished spot for fellow book lovers, a testament to Bob’s ability to cultivate spaces that brought joy to others.

Bob was deeply involved in his church, Big Walnut Baptist Church, where he served as a treasurer, was a member of the deacon board, and was an active participant in Sunday school. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and interactions with others. Later in life, he began attending First Christian Church, where he continued his service, even helping to create their library.

His dedication to his faith extended beyond the walls of his church. Bob served on the board for the American Baptist Churches of Indiana and even stepped in as their interim treasurer. His commitment to service was a shining example of his selflessness and his unwavering faith.

Despite his many commitments, Bob always made time for his family. His loved ones will remember him as a gentle soul, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. His faith-filled life was an inspiration to those around him, and his selfless nature made him a beloved figure in his community.
